Travel tips

Tipping
Most restaurants in Indonesia will add a 10% service charge and 11% tax to the bill. If you're impressed by the service leave an extra tip. For porters in hotels and airports, Rp 3000 per article of luggage is usually sufficient for 'short hauls', extra if you're feeling generous. In taxis, round the fare up to the nearest Rp4000, if you don't, the driver will.

Clothing
Except for mountainous areas, Indonesia's climate is hot, humid and tropical. Loose, cool clothing is therefore essential, as is a hat and sunscreen. Temperatures usually hover around the 30 degree Celsius mark. In the wet season (October - April) tropical storms can break out at any time, so carry an umbrella.

Others
Taxis in Indonesia are cheap and plentiful, and thankfully air conditioned, making them the best way to get around, especially in the cities. Make sure the driver knows where you're going before getting in, and make sure he uses the meter. If he refuses just get another taxi, they're usually not hard to find.

Exercise common sense when eating out. Warungs and food stalls may look enticing, but unless your system is adjusted to the vagaries of local cooking methods, they're best avoided. Good restaurants cafes and hotels are the best bet.

At street markets bargaining is the norm, and best done with a smile. Learning a few words of Bahasa.
